Nuts and bolts
It helps me to know that it matters to you, this history of complex people who chose to do the right thing in an era far darker than our own. Thank you, thank you.
Brief catch-up post, primarily for subscribers. Although if you run across this and read it, welcome! It’s a public post.
Substack’s beloved algorithm is currently promoting articles and essays related to the upcoming election. I don’t blame them. It’s an important election. Please exercise your right to vote!
However, non-election-related posts aren’t hitting feeds like they did only a month or two ago. Even when “restacked,” they languish in cyberspace. Only subscribers who have opted in for email (or app) notifications will for sure see WHY THIS MATTERS, at least between now and November 5.
Therefore, through Monday November 11, I’ll just post once weekly. I will be generating plenty of posts between now and then and schedule “three times weekly,” as had previously been my habit.
The “podcast” or serialized audio book will also start back up on November 11.
I’m also removing old posts from earlier WordPress sites and deleting the WordPress sites. It recently leaked that WordPress intends to start scraping content posted on the WordPress platform for their own generative AI tools, no “opt out” such as Substack offers.
That’s good for all of you, because I’m now concentrating content here on Substack. Since not all of you will necessarily be interested in every single topic, please remember that you can choose to receive email notifications about only the sections that interest you. “How to unsubscribe just from one section” can be found at the end of this post.
The three sections I have added – and which currently have no posts – are:
Human Face of War, a joint project between Center for White Rose Studies, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and Orenburg Charity Foundation “Eurasia” in Orenburg, Russia.
WRH3 Worktable, primary source documents from October 13, 1943 to December 31, 1950. These posts will only be for paid subscribers who have paid at least a year in advance. A simple letter agreement governing participation will also be required. Hate that this is necessary, but we need to protect our intellectual property. These posts will not be displayed on the home page of WHY THIS MATTERS. If you are a subscriber, you’ll get email notifications.
Hillel and Stammtisch, Cooking Together. Food unites. Many of the recipes from Henriette Davidis’ 1879 Cookbook for Germans in America are common to both Jewish and German cuisines. We want this FREE section to inspire dialog and bring students (and adults!) together, to talk and to eat.
Please note that the translation of the entire cookbook, with adaptations, will also be sold beginning in 2025 as a fundraiser for Center for White Rose Studies. The Hillel-Stammtisch section mentioned above will only contain kosher recipes. Sorry, no German pork chops!
This also means that your email notifications may be from one of the five topics – the three listed above, plus the extant WHY THIS MATTERS and the podcast. It’s my sincerest hope that using the “sections” feature will allow you to tailor your reading experience!
I appreciate every single one of you, whether you read religiously or sporadically, whether you comment on content, restack a post, or email me with your observations. Every time I hear from one of you, it makes me feel less like these things are going into a void.
It helps me to know that it matters to you, this history of complex people who chose to do the right thing in an era far darker than our own. So thank you, thank you.
Now for the how-to regarding email notifications! From Substack help desk:
Your subscribers can control which sections they receive emails from by changing the notifications settings in their account. To access their account, they should click on their personal account avatar (it’s on the top right of the screen on the desktop version). Then click “manage subscription”, and check or uncheck notifications for each section. They can also access notifications directly from https://example.substack.com/account, replacing “example” with your publication URL.
Subscribers are also offered the choice to unsubscribe from one or more sections when they click “unsubscribe” at the bottom of any of your emails.
