They survived the war, no thanks to "good people". Herta and one of her sons (Micha Probst) related this story to me regarding their close call with SS, after I told them about people I was meeting who complained about destruction of German property by American GIs. Neither wanted to hear those complaints. Their attitude: "They had it coming."

Seem to recall a parallel Biblical story. Abraham fialogues with God about Soddom & Gomorrah. If there are 10 good people, will you save the city? Bargaining for the future is an age-old endeavor.

In lieu of a dedication to Gretzschel's book, he opens with Abraham's "negotiations", with ever diminishing ask. He clearly does not believe there were ten, much less fifty, good people in his beloved hometown.
